Ian Walmsley

Professor Ian Walmsley CBE FRS FCGI is Director of the Oxford Quantum Institute (OQI), which brings together researchers from across the University of Oxford to accelerate the development and application of quantum science and technology. His research focuses on the use of light for quantum information processing, spanning quantum computing, simulation, sensing and networking.

In addition to leading the OQI, Professor Walmsley chairs the Strategic Advisory Committee of the National Quantum Computing Centre and serves on the National Quantum Strategic Advisory Board, which advises the UK government on its quantum technology programme.

Prior to these roles, Professor Walmsley served as Provost of Imperial College London and currently holds the position of Chair of Experimental Physics. He previously served as Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research and Hooke Professor of Experimental Physics at the University of Oxford, following a 20-year academic career in the United States.
