KUKII & Howie Lee: Finissage Performance
KUKII & Howie Lee translate the soundscape of Laure Prouvost’s WE FELT A STAR DYING into a communal sonic ceremony
For the finissage of Laure Prouvost’s WE FELT A STAR DYING, singer, producer and composer of the installation’s original soundscape KUKII (fka Lafawndah) and musical collaborator Howie Lee create a sonic ceremony that invites audiences to participate with voice and movement.
To build the installation’s soundscape, KUKII primarily used found recordings of devotional singing traditions from different regions of the world. These sounds were processed through a custom quantum AI model, and the resulting sonic textures interwoven with melodic choruses featuring lyrics written by Prouvost and Paul Buck. Spatially dispersed, the melodies were composed as if in search of form, drawing a parallel to nascent quantum technology.
The performance translates the soundscape’s textures and melodies into a communal experience that unfolds across the two main floors of Kraftwerk. KUKII and Howie Lee work with a live brass band, a choir and the audience to embody fragility, uncertainty and interconnectivity – concepts also characteristic of quantum phenomena.
