The Radical Outside: Conversations on Liminals
Exploring central ideas in Pierre Huyghe’s work and their emergence in his latest commission
Taking Pierre Huyghe’s new commission as its point of departure, this conversation programme brings together long-term collaborators and attentive observers to engage with the concepts, inquiries and methodologies that have shaped the artist’s practice over the years, culminating in the newly commissioned Liminals at Halle am Berghain.
Through a sustained inquiry into the conditions of experience, Huyghe’s work invites reflection on the thresholds shaping the relationships between beings, matter and their realities. In the first part of the programme, philosophers Anna Longo and Chiara Vecchiarelli examine Huyghe’s practice with a focus on the emergence of unstable realities, potentiality and simultaneity, drawing on concepts ranging from the imaginal and the subjective to quantum perspectives.
In the second half, quantum scientist Tommaso Calarco, who consulted on Liminals, and exhibition curator Carly Whitefield explore how the artwork engages with key quantum principles such as superposition and indeterminacy, and how these ideas shape the film’s vision of a reality in which many possibilities coexist. They also discuss Huyghe’s collaboration with Forschungszentrum Jülich, in which sound was produced through quantum simulation.
