Live Events
The London-based collective CEL platforms Black art, music and creative activism across many settings, ranging from night clubs to art institutions. Foundations launches a long-term, touring project which aims to link artists, genres and discourses beyond regional configurations. CEL understands art as a space for experimenting with alternative forms of organisation and imagination. With Foundations, it wants to prototype a new ecosystem for Black artistic innovation and invites local and international collaborators to, in author Octavia Butler’s words, “write themselves into” a precarious future.

Foundations launches with a party curated in collaboration with Oroko Radio. The international line-up brings together Black artists known for pushing the boundaries of club music. At the forefront of experimental electronic sound, Bobby Beethoven has redefined the dancefloor by dismantling the traditional structure of DJ sets. His practice explores club culture as a space of both liberation and control. La Diouck represents a new generation of Franco-African artists who blend cultural heritage with contemporary influences. Having recently released his debut album Grace Jokes on PAN Records, his music merges experimental club sounds with ethereal vocals in Wolof, French, and English. Always chasing new sounds, Paris-based label head Bamao Yendé is a DJ and producer who fuses baile funk, techno, breaks, and logobi into high-energy sets with an R’n’B touch. Oroko alumna Moneyama, a DJ and Berlin club scene staple, blends multiple genres while drawing from her Ghanaian heritage. LIL RISK is a multi-hyphenate DJ and party organizer known for her unexpected combinations of techno, experimental sounds, hard dance, and a wide range of global club music.

As part of Foundations, CEL invites LYZZA to perform her LP SUBSTATE. Building four sound worlds of resistance out of LYZZA’s own experiences of broken systems, the project aims to subvert the conditions of the various hostile environments the artist has navigated. LYZZA paints vivid portraits of racial profiling within both creative and public spheres, music industry politics and professional disregard for emotional labor, each told with urgency and honesty. Finding strength in direct address, she works through her frustrations by violently rejecting them, channeling what she describes as an intense “yearning for subversion.” SUBSTATE merges raw electricity, polished pop and everything from baile funk, to Baltimore club, to UK drill into a stroboscopic production designed to demolish preconceptions.

Description of the Installation
The installation is located on the second floor of the building. You are free to move around the room and explore the various elements. Please note that there are video installations, sounds and changing lights, including flashing lights and strobe lighting. Some areas may be a little dark.
On one side of the room, there are two different video works shown on an LED screen. Opposite is a pyramid that acts as seating area. Wheelchair users can position themselves next to the object and watch the video works.
For those who prefer not to sit in the seating area on the pyramid – which requires climbing a few steps – there are alternative seating options nearby or available from our team on site.
Next to the pyramid and the screen, a light and sound installation extends across most of the room.
Separated from this area on the other side of the room is an area dedicated to events, where music, live performances and other events take place. A video is also projected onto the wall there, and the sound can be heard through headphones. Further details are available on the LAS website or from the team on site.
For visitors who are blind or have low vision
Please note that there is no natural light in the building. The installation uses changing, artificial lighting and strobe lighting in some moments. Unfortunately, we do not offer audio descriptions of the visual elements of the installation.
For visitors who are deaf or hard of hearing
The videos displayed in the installation have subtitles in German and English. Unfortunately, we do not offer closed captioning for the sound elements in the installation or sign language interpretation during events.
For visitors on the Autism Spectrum
To prepare for your visit, you can use two documents. The social narrative contains photographs and short descriptions of what to expect. Our sensory map shows you where to find areas that are likely quieter and less crowded. (coming soon)
Fidgets and earplugs are available at the ticket desk.
